Dam liner prevent unwanted seepage and pollution

Dam liners are an effective solution to prevent seepage and water loss. Because they are made from a manufactured material the thickness of the liner is consistent over the whole dam floor so you can be sure that it is effective in ensuring that your precious water is not lost or wasted through seepage. The dam surface needs be as smooth as possible and free of sharp or abrasive materials.  A layer of sand can be used to create a smooth base, as well as using a geo-textile to protect against sharp objects.

All of our dam liners are packaged on a heavy duty core and are heavily protected to ensure no damage occurs during transport. Instructions are included as a separate flyer with indicative marks on the liner to show which direction to roll out the liner.
Dam Liner1

Dam Liner Material

The type and thickness of material in dam liners varies. The main determinants of the type of material to be used are:

  • size of the dam or pond
  • exposure to UV
  • required dam liner life
  • preparation and nature of the base of the dam
  • available budget for the dam liner

Dam liners require very little maintenance and are easy to install. Fabric Solutions can pre-fabricate dam and pond liners up to approximately 3000sqm in a single piece. Larger projects can be fabricated and supplied in multiple sections and joined onsite.

FSA can deliver liners to site anywhere in Australia or the world including many remote locations.

 Features:-

Dam liners prevent unwanted seepage and pollution, making them ideal for situations where the liquid contained may contaminate the ground water
  • An effective and low-cost way of creating new, low-maintenance and easy to install waterproof reservoir bodies
  • Fabric Solutions Australia can pre-fabricate dam and geomembrane liners up to approximately 3000 sqm as a single sheet

Inground pool liners should be measured and fitted by a professional

Inground swimming pool liners are made from super strong virgin vinyl, and need to be resistant to pool chemicals and weather. Our liners are designed and manufactured to make your in-ground pool look beautiful while also protecting it so that you can enjoy your swimming oasis for years and years to come. We offer in-ground liners to fit pools of any shape and size, and specialise in customising the liners to meet your individual style and taste.

An inground pool liner should be made from virgin material (not recycled), be a minimum thickness of 0.75mm, and UV rated for Australian conditions. Above ground pool liners are usually slightly thinner at 0.5 mm, and should never be used in an inground pool.
inground pool liner
Inground pool liners should always be measured and fitted by a professional. However above ground pool liners can be fitted by the DIY person, see here for an example installation guide.

Measuring the pool for my new liner

All inground pool liners are custom made to fit, so in order to avoid either over-stretching your liner on the walls and corners or excessive wrinkling, your pool has to be properly measured. If your liner is over stretched in any area, it will be thin, making it susceptible to leaks and premature failure. Likewise, too much material will leave wrinkles that are not aesthetically pleasing and will be unpleasant to walk over.  An inground pool liner needs to fit like a glove and be free of wrinkles, so it has to be evenly stretched “a little” while being properly set.

For simple shapes, your installer will be able to measure your pool accurately with a tape measure. For more complex shapes such as pools with steps or step outs that need to be covered they will organise the measuring to be done using a 3D measuring system, that can sample up to 2000 points, ensuring a super accurate measurement.

Pillow tanks offer an ideal storage solution

Bladder and Pillow tanks offer an ideal storage solution for a wide range of applications, the most popular of which is water storage. Water storage is often required on a temporary basis in many areas and applications. It may not be efficient or economical to install permanent tanks. An ideal solution is to buy a portable water bladder.

Pillow tanks are collapsible flexible water tanks. Pillow tanks are sometimes referred to as bladder or lay flat tanks. Pillow water tanks can be quickly deployed and are extremely easy to transport. For rough ground conditions, a pillow tank can be supplied with ground sheet if required.
Pillow Tank
A pillow tank responds perfectly to the storage needs and liquid transport. Bladders and Pillow Tanks are designed to provide you with collapsible, flexible storage for not only water, but water waste and other chemical liquids that need to be stored. We manufacture our bladder tanks from a range of materials to accommodate site requirements and these tanks can be used for residential, commercial or industrial applications.

Features:-
• Heavy-duty industrial style flexible fabric tanks
• Collapsible and portable
• Designed to accommodate potable and non-potable water
• Custom sizes available

Pool covers also have several other benefits

Saving Money with a Pool Cover

62% of Queensland is now officially in drought

With low rain falls being recorded across many parts of Australia (source: Bureau of Meteorology), every drop of water that was precious before, now it is GOLD. If you own a pool, then you can save  water (and money!) with the use of an inexpensive pool cover. Also called a pool blanket or solar pool cover, when cut to the shape of your pool, it will form a barrier that prevents water from evaporating away. In some capital cites, water evaporation can be as high as 5.6 mm per day. The chart below shows you how much water is evaporating from you pool every year.
Pool Cover
With the use of a pool cover, evaporation can reduced by a much a 97%, which provides water savings of approximately 50,000-70,000 litres per year depending on where you are situated in Australia.
Pool covers also have several other benefits
Pool covers are without a doubt one of the great inventions in pool technology. A properly fitted pool cover will not only eliminate evaporation almost completely, but will also help prevent dust and debris from entering the pool when not in use. Use of a pool cover will also mean a reduction in chemical usage, which occurs two ways:

  1. less contamination means less use of chemicals to clear the contamination,

  2. chemicals are not lost to chemical evaporation.
With a reduction of chemical consumption at around 50% to 70%, and with cleaner water, the pool cleaning system doesn’t have to work as hard.
pool
The other main benefit of a pool cover is that they greatly reduce heat loss through evaporation. The benefit can be an increase in your pool temperature by up to 8°C. This means heating equipment is cheaper to run and when no equipment is installed, you get a longer swimming season.

So What is a Pool Covers?

Most pool covers are essentially the same, in that they are some sort of plastic cover in which the primary function is to reduce water evaporating and stopping debris from entering the pool. They are typically made with bubble in them, so as to help trap heat and act as an insulator. Pool covers also come in a range of thicknesses, typically ranging from 400 micron to 600 micron. Generally the thicker the blanket, the better it will perform in terms of heat retention and longevity.

Safety Covers

One other type of pool cover is a safety cover made from either a mesh or a solid material. Both are stretched taut over the pool and anchored firmly around the edges. These are designed to stop people accidentally falling in. Mesh covers are porous and will stop leaves, twigs etc, but still allow water through. Solid covers will block absolutely everything, but may accumulate water on the surface that could pose a safety hazard and should be removed.

Make Sure You Get The Right Product

When looking for a pool blanket, like many of the things we buy these days, you get what you paid for. So when looking for value for money, look for products with the Smart Approved Watermark. Smart Approved WaterMark is Australia’s water saving labelling program for products and services that are helping reduce water use around the home. By choosing products with the distinctive Smart Approved WaterMark label you can be confident you’re doing your bit to reduce water use around your pool.

Installation of Pond Liner

If you are planning to build a pond then what kind of pond it would be? The pond can be plastic lined, concrete or rubber lined. Pond liners are better for water gardens because these allow for very cheap installations. Ponds require some pre-planning though. To construct a pond, we should purchase a pond liner and the size of liner must be appropriate to our pond size. Make sure you pond liners is large enough to fit the area you have marked out, with some left over for over hang. The total width of the pond liner should be the pond width plus twice the maximum depth plus and extra 300 to 500 mm. The same with the length. This ensures you have not only enough to cover the pond, but enough for over hang so you can edge and trim later on.
pond liner install diagram
After we designed the pond on paper, we need to buy all necessary materials to build it. Pond liners suppliers like Fabric Solutions Australia can sell you a pond liner in a range of materials depending on  your requirements. Make sure when you ring about your pond liner that you ensure the liner is UV protected as well as fish friendly. Some liners contain chemicals that make them unsuitable for use in fish ponds, eg tank liners used for drinking water.

To start it by marking the outline of the pond with a rope. After we finish digging the pond, make sure the ground is smooth and try and remove any sharp objects like rocks etc. You can help protect the pond liner from rocky soil we used geo-textile liner as well. Care must be taken to make certain that the liner is not damaged or punctured during installation. You can also use sand layer to protect the liner from any type of damage.

The liner should be carefully laid-out into the hole. It is important to minimize the folding and pleating of the liner, because they have the potential to trap leaves and scruff. Once installed properly, liner can last for many years, lifespans of 20 yrs plus is not unheard off for materials like EPDM pond liners or even HDPE pond liners.

After the pond liner is installed, it is must that we should cover all the corners of the liner as much as possible with rocks and other things. It will not just only protect the liner, but made the pond more beautiful. Applying the edging materials around the liner will also help to weigh it down, plus the extra benefit of giving our pond a more natural look.
Now, the installation part of the pond liner (which is the most difficult part) has been completed. Remaining part is to install the pump and decoration of the pond, plus any fish and plant you want.

Bladder and pillow tanks are used to store liquids

Bladder and pillow tanks are used to store liquids, sometimes for short periods of time. A great deal of confusion surrounds the nomenclature surrounding bladders and pillow tanks. In short a pillow tank is a type of bladder. Bladders generally can be made as pillow tanks (take their name from their shape and form) or as shaped bladders (made to fit a particular shape).

Pillow tanks are a self supporting bladder and do not have walls as such. To get height they effectively steal some material from the top and bottom of the bladder giving that traditional curved shape towards the middle along the length of the bladder most particularly. The maximum fill height of any pillow tank is primarily a function of its width and to a lesser extent the length. For example a bladder sized to suit a truck bed (2.4m wide) is limited to about 0.7m max fill height.
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
Since pillow tanks are self supporting, the material that they are made from needs to be very strong as the pillow tank, is under constant load (hoop stress) similar to that of a circular tank.  This fact limits the fill heights of pillow tanks, irrespective of the bladder width to in most cases 1.3m – 1.5m in height. The other thing with pillow tanks is that due to their curved shape on the length, width and height, the capacity (stored volume) of a pillow tank is about 70% that of a rectangle with the same maximum dimensions. Since pillow tanks are self supporting and the material is under constant load, their life is limited. They are in reality designed for short term but repeated use.

Pillow tanks are sometimes deliberately made quite oversize and are fitted into tanks of various shapes or shipping containers. These oversize bladders then tend to follow the shape of the surrounding structure. Pillow tanks generally are cheaper to produce than shaped bladders. Fabric Solutions Australia can and has made pillow tanks from about 50 litre capacity to 1000 kL capacity.  The larger bladders tend to be for water storage while the fuel, sewerage and chemical storage pillow tanks tend to be restricted to about 100 kL maximum size.

Bladders, as in shaped bladders on the other hand, are made to fit the shape of the surrounding structure. At Fabric Solutions Australia we have made shaped bladders to fit into the keel of yachts, fit into the companionway on large yachts, to fit into shipping containers, under seats and in floor wells of vehicles etc. These bladders often used to s tore fuel, sewerage, grey water or potable water. A common application for this style of bladder is to repair existing leaking tanks. The tank forms the structure and takes the load so there is no restriction as to the height of the bladder. These bladders are often strange shapes to suit the tanks they are repairing. Shaped bladders only follow the shape of the structure and if used without surrounding structure will tend to sit low and flat. There is really no size limitation on shaped bladders as long as the surrounding structure can take the loads, the bladder can be fitted correctly and fully supported.

Great choice for rejuvenating a pool

Pool liners are a great choice for rejuvenating a pool, there are however several points that people overlook, stopping them from getting the most from their pool.

Ignoring Pool Chemistry

Vinyl pool liners are made with a high chemical resistance; however prolonged contact to high levels of chlorine will still bleach the liner. To avoid this make sure only diluted chlorine is added (or chlorine is not just added in one spot, but spread over an area) and that tablets are not allowed to rest on the liner. Also watch the pH levels, too low and the water becomes acidic, weakening the liner and too high, you get calcium deposits. Of course most modern pools today are salt pools and rarely require chlorine to be added.
inground_pool_liner_job_1_preparation

Letting Dogs into the Pool.

A quality pool liner can withstand some rough punishment, even from dogs. If you are not too sure, just try and push a fork through a piece of quality vinyl, it’s not easy! Ideally you won’t let a dog into a pool, but if you must, make sure the dog’s claws are clipped, that way sharp claws are less likely to slice into the vinyl.
Also consider fibreglass or tile covered steps at pool entry points, these are more durable for animals. If you can’t cover the steps, you might also try a small animal ladder to help assist smaller animals to getting in and out. Always discourage animals from going near the sides and never let them exit from the sides. Lastly, common sense says NEVER let a dog or any other animal into a pool unsupervised.

After the dog has been in your pool, ensure to run the pool pump and remove hair that will accumulate. Make sure to wash your dog down afterwards too, they are just like people and can get skin irritations from prolonged contact to chlorine.

Algae, leaves and other debris stain the sides.

We all know that cleaning a pool is not the most fun thing you can be doing, but letting organic matter build up can stain a pool liner if left for too long. Any regular pool maintenance will include a quick skim to remove leaves and debris, plus a quick brush down of any algae or calcium build up.

Non Use of a Pool Cover or Blanket

Apart from regular maintenance, the next best thing you can do for your pool is to buy a pool cover, even a cheap one (although try not to buy too cheap!). A properly fitted pool cover will save you a lot of time in maintenance and a lot of money in chemicals, and who doesn’t like that!

To fit a pool cover properly, it must be at least 75 mm wider all around the edge. This means the cover will fold up along the edges, forming a barrier. This can stop up to 95% of debris from entering the pool, plus it greatly reduces water evaporation. Chemical usage is also reduced but always consult with a local pool shop on the best chemical balance.

Dam liners require very little maintenance

Repairing Leaks in Rural and Farm Dams

A dam on a farm is more than just a hole in the ground that collects water, it is a renewable source of water to feed livestock and provide irrigation for crops. A common misconception we get with customers is that if a dam leaks, it probably wasn’t built properly and a cheap dam liner can be utilised to fix the problem. Dams will become part of the landscape eco-system and so must be properly designed and maintained (in most cases approval is also needed by local councils or water boards).
bladder tank - used for yacht range extension

Soil conditions determine how the dam is to be initially constructed and ideally a dam is build on a clay based soil, any other soil to some degree will leak. The worst soils are sandy, loam based soils and shale rock soils. Dams are then made with either a clay or bentonite layer and the use of things like dam liners is uncommon as the cost his higher. Liners only employed where other sealing techniques have failed.

Dam leakage can not only be due to the soil condition, but by ground movement, erosion, incursion by tree roots and damage from livestock, just to name a few. In cases where leakage occurs, several different types of solutions can be undertaken:

- Rebuild a new dam at a different site.

- Adding a sealant to the dam, however success is low when there is still water in the dam and it is greatly increased with the dam empty. Adding a sealant to a full dam means that the application is largely uncontrolled, and thus success is not guaranteed. The treated layer will also not be compacted making it prone to being disturbed and damaged. Sealants include synthetic polymers, clays such as sodium and calcium bentonite clay and other materials like gypsum.

- Other options include the use of sodium trippolyphosphate (for certain soil conditions), bitumen and concrete .

- Completely cleaning out the dam, and re-compact the soil.

- Use of a dam liner, often very expensive, but has a very high success rate and can last from 10 to 30 yrs depending on soil conditions and material choice.

When looking at a dam liner, there are a few different types of material that can be used, including:

Polypropylene and Polyethylene are the most common types of liners. PVC was once a common usage for large dams, but not so any more. It is too costly and doesn’t offer a long life expectancy. It is still suitable for smaller installs though. A quality HDPE liner can provide for a long life expectancy, and EPDM and butyl based rubber liners tend to give the longest lifespans, with 30+ yrs not being uncommon.

For further information on leaking dams and possible remedies, we recommend reading the resource on leaking dams is provided by the Western Australian Government at

also see the NSW Government’s resource handbook on dams, which discusses methods of fitting the dam-liners into the eco-systems:

Onion tanks are a perfect solution for temporary liquid

onion_tank_01
What is an Onion Tank?

An onion tanks is a self erecting, self supporting, easily relocatable liquid storage tank made from a variety of fabrics like reinforced PVC. They are distinctive by the central foam filled collar that will rise as the tank is filled. The unique design of the onion tank means that they have a very quick setup time (typically 1 or 2 people can have a unit ready to go in about 5 or 10 mins).

Onion tanks are a perfect solution for temporary liquid or chemical storage and where rapid deployment is required. They are also designed for ongoing use and an onion tank will, when properly maintained offer a long service life.
Onion tanks suitable for a variety of applications containing liquid from 1,000 litres to 30,000 litres. Since no two applications are the same, they are manufactured from a wide range of scrim reinforced materials.

What is scrim?

Scrim is the reinforced layer that is sandwiched between the water proof upper and lower coatings that gives the material the ability to withstand the great tensile loads applied to the onion tank when is full and in use.
Some of the applications where Onion Tanks may be used are;
  • remote site water supply (such as drilling and exploration operations)
  • bushfire fighting water tanks in remote locations (particularly as a water station for helicopter water buckets where they are filled from a shallower source)
  • temporary water storage that easily fits on the back of a ute or truck when packed (e.g. for swimming pool maintenance)
  • temporary farm and rural water tanks that can be shifted as and when required
  • spill containment particularly where fast deployment and filling of a tank are critical
Onion tanks are also called the following:
  • Collar tank
  • Collar dams
  • Onion bladder tanks

Choose an appropriate Inground Pool Liner

inground_pool_liner_job_3_finished
Often when refurbishing an existing swimming pool,  only economically feasible option is to re-line the pool with a vinyl pool liner. This does not mean they are an inferior option though, as inground pool liners can last 20 to 25 years or more. A pool liner won’t chip or peel and can accommodate ground movement, which is the likely cause of the renovation in the first place.

With a long lifespan, the average pool owner will likely on need to replace a liner once or maybe twice. To ensure this though, you need to have a “good installation” in order to get the full life out of your liner. Lastly you will need to choose an appropriate pool liner material. So this means, that while it is technically possible for an inground pool liner to be installed by the home handyman, in reality, to handle any problems that may arise during your installation, make sure you find an experienced installer.
Can I put my own inground pool liner in?

While it is feasible for the DIY person to install their own liner especially for above ground pools, it is not recommended for inground pools. Indeed few manufacturers will supply an inground pool liner to the average person. For the best and highest quality result, your pool liner should always be fitted by an experienced installer. They will prepare your pool shell, and take precise measurements to ensure the membrane will fit your pool perfectly. A special fixing system will be used to secure the liner around tile borders, steps, skimmer box’s and other pool fixtures like step out areas. Once in position, it is then vacuum-sealed to form a smooth skin, and is then ready to be filled with water.

Fabric Solutions High-quality Swimming Pool Liners

A key benefit is that liners come in a variety of exciting colours and patterns, are UV rated for Australian conditions and inhibits bacteria, mould and mildew growth. Ideally they should be textured (embossed) materials as these offer a far better “non slip” finish. To ensure longevity, all inground pool liners installed MUST be made from a material that is no thinner than 0.75mm. Above ground pool liners traditionally are manufactured for 0.50mm and while you can put a .75mm thick liner into an above ground you should NEVER be talked into putting a .50mm liner into an inground pool.

Your installer should be able to supply you with colour samples. Once you have picked a colour, they should be able to either show you pictures of other pool finished with the colour or even better direct you see a completed job for yourself and you can also speak to the home owner about how their job progressed.  To get the best life from your liner you should choose a liner made from virgin vinyl, not one that uses any recycled materials.

Pool Liner Warranties

Most people misunderstand the pool liner warranty, and are tricked into a purchase soley based on the warranty offered. All pool liner warranties are pro-rated after a certain amount of time, which means you get less and pay more the longer the liner is in your pool before (and certainly an if)  a problem arises. Few if any liner replacements are credited with a manufacturer’s warranty after the fourth year, so don’t purchase a liner based on a “warranty gimmick”. Always check with the supplier as to how the warranty will be applied in case of a failure.

Pool covers are best inventions in pool technology

image
There is nothing like the joy that having a swimming pool in your own backyard can bring. Not only can you cool down on hot days, but they enhance the look of your backyard.  But swimming pools can be expensive to maintain, especially when the chemistry gets out of balance. These are 2 basic things you can do to maintain a healthy swimming pool and reduce the time you looking after it.

Chemical Balance:

The most important aspect of any swimming pool is to keep all the chemicals in check and at optimum levels. Maintenance need not be time consuming either, and should only take a few minutes each day. To ensure the right pool chemical balance
,
Daily (around 5mins when all is good with the pool)
  1. check that the water is crystal clear
  2. check there is no build up of algae. Especially check around ‘dead’ areas like pool steps where water flow isn’t as great.
  3. check there is a good flow from the water jets
  4. check there is a good flow of water in the skimmer
  5. check there is no excess leaves or other debris in the pool
  6. make sure there is correct pressure in the pool filter
Twice A Week (around 30 mins)
  1. measure chlorine, pH and stabiliser levels
  2. clean out the skimmer
  3. brush the sides and bottom of the pool
Weekly:- dose of phosphate remover
Monthly:- Professional check on water levels by local pool shop

Regular maintenance will prevent the need for pool “shocking” and actually save you a lot of time in the long run buy addressing problems before they get out of hand. When the pool balance gets too far out and you have to pool “Shock”, you have to wait at least 1 day before you can swim, so regular checking of chemical levels means your pool is not only always ready for fun, but your chemical usage is at its minimum (which is good for your health too!). A quick brush of the pool surface once or twice a week also removes build up more easily that if it is left harden over time.

Use of pond liners offer a cost-effective solution

I wanted to put an ornamental pond in my back yard to attract frogs. I just wanted to sit outside on a warm summer’s night and listen to the great sounds that frogs make. It is so relaxing.

But first, I need to make my pond. I chose a location in our backyard that wasn’t too shady (as the leaves trees contaminate the water), and that was fairly level. First job is to dig the hole I want to the size and shape, as I want the pond to not only attract the frogs but to look good as well.

I looked at a number of ways to waterproof the hole once I had dug it. Concrete was my first thought. This quickly disappeared when i looked at the practicality and the cost of lining with concrete. This type of lining still needs some sort of waterproofing to seal it. Let’s face it, I’m not building a structural wall here just a “cheap” pond. However I did want to add fish at some stage.

With the pond liner in, it was recommended that we cover the edges of the liner as much as possible with rocks and other features. This not only helps protect the liner, but made the pond much more attractive.
And now the pond is full and the sound of the frogs is just a wonderful way to relax on the warm summer nights.
